Pune: The Sinhgad Road police on Saturday morning detained three minor boys, all aged 16 and 17 years, on charge of assaulting a sweet shop helper to death at Hingne Khurd on Sinhgad Road around 6.30pm on Friday over a trivial reason.
The victim, Abhay Maruti Suryavanshi (20), worked at a sweet shop on Sinhagad Road. His mother, Satvashila (36), lodged a complaint later in the night.
Senior inspector Raghvendra Kshirsagar of the Sinhagad Road police said, “Motorcycle-borne Suryavanshi overtook the two-wheeler of the trio and it enraged the latter. The trio picked up arguments with Suryavanshi over the issue and assaulted him with billhooks on head, shoulders, back, chest and stomach. The victim was assaulted 35 times and was found motionless at the spot.”
Kshirsagar said, “Suryavanshi was taken to the Sassoon General Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. One of the minor boys was detained about 15 days ago in an extortion case. He had demanded money from local shopkeepers. He was released from the govt boys’ observation home a few days ago. The parents of the minor boys are casual workers, like domestic helps and painters.”
