Pune: MNS chief Raj Thackeray on Friday said the opposition parties were diverting attention from burning issues to caste-based politics.
“Every till now had some major issue, on which those polls were fought. However, this is the country’s first election where there is absolutely no issue. Since the opposition did not get anything to pinpoint in the last decade, it has resorted to diverting the society toward caste-based politics,” the MNS chief said, while holding a rally for Mahayuti candidate Murlidhar Mohol. He also exhorted voters to hold their elected representatives accountable for their localities’ planned development.
Appealing to minorities not to fall prey to the opposition’s propaganda, he said, “The opposition is misleading different communities by creating a divide. Fatwas are being issued in some localities to vote in favour of Congress, UBT and NCP (SCP).”
While blaming NCP (SCP) chief Sharad Pawar for starting caste-based politics in the state in 1999, Raj Thackeray praised Ajit Pawar for not indulging in such politics. “I might have many differences with Ajit Pawar but he never did caste-based politics despite being with Sharad Pawar,” the MNS chief said.
“The poison of casteism has been deliberately spread in the society since 1999. Though the cities and societies were being destroyed, some deliberately played caste-based politics to make people agitate against each other,” he said.
