Pune: Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar said on Thursday an expansion of the Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Memorial in Pune was being planned, and land acquisition would be expedited for the same.
“The existing memorial appears to be congested. A bigger memorial will be developed. Due compensation will be paid to property owners near the memorial before acquisition,” he said.
Pawar was speaking to reporters after visiting the memorial of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule on the occasion of birth anniversary of the social reformer.
Pawar said that memorials of social reformers like Phule were going to inspire generations to come. The work of building a memorial at Bhidewada, the first school for girls in India, was underway, he said. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) was in possession of land required for the same. “Four to five proposals for memorials have reached the PMC. Of these, one will be selected, and work will start soon,” he said.
On Eknath Khadse
Ajit Pawar said Eknath Khadse rejoining BJP was much anticipated. According to him, Khadse was associated with BJP for around 40 years, before joining NCP. It was expected that he would shift to BJP again as he had publicly announced the same.
“Khadse was instrumental in taking BJP to the masses. He was among the tallest leaders of the party. He has given inclusive outlook to the BJP,” he said.
