PUNE: They say pets are humanising and if you find one while socialising, it’s an extra treat for sure.
Quite a few eateries and cafes in Pune these days are having resident pets, whose job is to be their adorable selves for customers who love and care for animals.
Talking about 11-year-old Joshua and his son Junior, the Labradors who bring in customers to play with them, Savyasachin Mittal, the owner of Cafe Joshua in Aundh, said, “Joshua, after whom the cafe is named after, is a therapy dog. Very calm and loves to sit with the customers who want to pet him”.
He added that Joshua’s son Junior is more energetic and playful.
“Both are well-trained and non-reactive to other pets or guests. Senior citizens love to sit with Joshua, while Junior loves to play fetch. Both of them happily share their toys with other pets brought by guests”.
Mittal said, “Many guests who cannot keep a pet at home request to take our dogs for a walk. We even get funny inquiries where people call and ask how much will we charge if they want to come and play with the dogs for an hour or so.”
At The Fat Labrador Cafe, Bavdhan, customers get upset if they don’t get a chance to meet resident pet Rumi, who hangs out at the eatery throughout the week.
“Rumi’s four years old, doesn’t have anger issues and loves people. But she usually avoids going to people she doesn’t know, if she sees you around a couple of times, only then will she come to you. Customers come to the cafe to see her. Though unfair we once received a two-star rating because the guests came to the cafe expecting to meet Rumi, but she wasn’t there that day. Sometimes people book reservations according to when Rumi would be around at the cafe just to play with her,” said Aniket Naik, one of the partners of the cafe.
Rocky, a seven-year-old German Shephard-Indie mix at Butter Brews on SB Road, spends his days charming the guests, and the nights moonlighting as a guard dog for the cafe.
“Rocky was an abandoned dog, who found care and comfort at the cafe a year-and-a-half ago. Some of the regulars at the cafe often bring him treats, which he thoroughly enjoys. He is, however, not allowed to enter the indoor section or the kitchen area because of hygiene purposes,” said Harsh Agarwal, the co-owner of Butter Brews.
Sandy Singh, the owner of Swig at Koregaon Park, said as one of the oldest pet-friendly restaurants in the city, they have three Indies – eight-year-olds Bella and Stella and seven-month-old Buddy.
“Our customers often look forward to spoiling our dogs with treats but they never seek food from our guests,” he said.
