Pune: The wife of the man whose body was found in a gunny bag floating in the Nira river was arrested by the Pune Rural police on Tuesday. Along with her partner, she was charged with murder and disposal of the body.
Superintendent of Pune Rural police Pankaj Deshmukh said, “The woman had filed a missing person’s complaint about her husband with Hadapsar police on Sunday, six days after killing him. A tailor’s tag on the victim’s shirt and an Om tattoo on his right hand helped us crack the case.”
The police identified the victim as Siddheshwar Bhise (40) of Sasanenagar in Hadapsar. Investigations revealed that his wife (30) had an affair with co-accused Shivaji Sutar (32) of Dharashiv district.
Deshmukh said the decomposed body of an unknown man was found in a gunny bag in the Nira river near an eatery at Sarola village. The limbs were tied and there were marks on the throat, indicating the man was either throttled or strangled to death.
“We traced the tailor to Lohara in Dharashiv village. He led us to Bhise’s relative, who identified the victim. Bhise was a tanker driver staying in Hadapsar,” Deshmukh said.
Meanwhile, they also came to know of the missing person’s complaint. “We found discrepancies in the woman’s statement and subjected her to some intense questioning, during which she spilled the beans and admitted to killing her husband with the help of her partner,” the officer said.
The police took the woman into custody on Monday and arrested Sutar from Andur village in Dharashiv district.
Inspector Rajesh Gawali of the Rajgad police said that during the questioning, the woman said Sutar, who runs a canteen in his village, was her schoolmate. They were in a relationship. “The duo hatched the plot to eliminate Bhise since they wanted to stay together,” he said.
Gawali said late on the night of March 3, the woman and Sutar strangled Bhise in the latter’s house at Sasanenagar. They tied his limbs and put the body inside a gunny bag. “They kept the gunny bag on a scooter, took the woman’s seven-year-old daughter along and travelled over 52km to reach Sarola in Bhor taluka. They dumped the body into the Nira river.”
He said the police are yet to record the statement of the victim’s daughter. The suspects have been charged under sections 103 (murder) and 238 (disappearance of evidence of offence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. “The duo was produced before the court on Tuesday and remanded to police custody till March 17,” Gawali added.
